We’ve all been there: the hand-addressed, vaguely metallic envelop arrives in the mail requesting the pleasure of your company at a friend or family member’s wedding, filling you with anticipation, which quickly turns into anxiety at the oh-so-familiar question, What am I going to wear?
Weddings are notorious for their sense of pageantry, to the delight of some and chagrin of others. The most difficult thing to wrap one’s head around is that each wedding boasts its own specific dress code that is seemingly independent from any other wedding-related event.
Beach Weddings
A ceremony on a beach demands a flowy dress that will keep you cool while still maintaining an air of elegance. Keep it simple, keep it chic, and keep it airy. Don’t opt for a tight cocktail dress for the beach, instead choose a dress that’s comfy and breathable. Oh, and lose the heels – you’re on a beach after all. And remember, a wedding in the country requires carefully selected footwear (mud and Manolos are never a good combination).
City Weddings
Chic city weddings are the perfect opportunity to get a little trendy. You don’t need to go over-the-top with your gowns or cocktail dresses. Remember that you’re attending a wedding, not your senior prom! If your dress is on the simple side, then amp up your outfit with a few key accessories like an amazing pair of stilettos, a jewelled necklace, and top your outfit up with a sleek hairdo. Just be sure you know whether the wedding you’re attending is black-tie or cocktail, and style your outfit from that.
And then there are esoteric codes to consider, like: Can you wear white? Can you wear black? Can you re-wear the same dress to a different wedding?
With so many different questions and variables, it’s a wonder we ever make it to the wedding dressed at all! Take comfort in knowing that you’re not alone. The only question now is which outfits will you say “I do” to?
