Check out our latest picks of happenings in and around Vancouver, just in time for the weekend…
It might be time to check out Chutzpah… rather… the Chutzpah Festival, celebrating Jewish cinema, art, dance and other forms of creative expression at various venues around Vancouver. Don’t miss this weekend’s world premiere performance by Donald Sales and dANCE cOMPANY. Donald Sales, the Artistic Director of Vancouver-based Project20, presents the world premiere of a new work, gR33N, set to a variety of music including that of renowned composer Owen Belton. Performed by Rebecca Margolick, Katie Cassady, Sarah Brinson and Donald Sales, gR33N is a work that elaborates on our envies, illnesses, greed and the advantages of ignorance in a fun, mysterious and raw fashion.
The Vancouver International Wine Festival winds down this weekend at the Vancouver Convention Centre, so it’s your last chance to explore the diverse world of wine under one roof. Tickets are pretty scarce so don’t delay! Think about it: you get to make your way around a massive room trying out the libations of more than 176 wineries representing more than 15 countries. It’s like the Olympics for your palate.
Winding things down this weekend, it is your final chance to check out the Talking Stick Festival. This vibrant citywide festival provides a stage for extraordinary Aboriginal artists – from established to emerging, national to international – performing live music, dance, theatre, multi-media, storytelling and performance art. One you don’t want to miss is the Ab-Original Cabaret (an event that started it all). Tickets are still available at The Cultch for Saturday’s show.
Oscar parties abound this Sunday and you won’t want to miss your chance to strut your stuff down the red carpet at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre’s celebration in support of Cineworks. Red carpet photos are set to take place, followed by a cocktail reception, and (in time for the show) a full dinner. Nearby, The Morrissey is hosting their 3rd Annual Oscar Party in support of VOKRA – with 100% of the ticket sale proceeds going to support the rescue of abandoned kittens and cats. Learn more, and buy your $25 ticket here.
Coming up: We’ve already got our calendars marked for the return of the Vancouver International Dance Festival that kicks things off into high gear next week (running March 7th to 29th). Catch a fantastic international mix of dance artists, choreographers and more from Germany, USA, across Asia and beyond. On our list of must-see performances: the Guangdong Modern Dance Company with the Goh Ballet. Don’t miss a show, and save on tickets here.
