As you approach the age of 25, your body starts to produce less and less collagen. Sadly, that means you no longer have the abundance of collagen you had in your teens and early twenties. Producing less collagen causes our skin to be more dehydrated, show early signs of wrinkles, while lossing that “youthful” glow. But after some late-night research worrying about my skin starting to sag, I discovered Gua Sha. It’s so important to take care of your skin and implementing this step into your daily skin routine is a must!

What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha comes from traditional Chinese medicine. “Gua” translates to scrape and “Sha” means petechiae, which are tiny red, flat spots that appear on your skin. The stone comes in all shapes and sizes and can be made out of Green Jade, Bian stone or Rose Quartz. Using the tool to rub the skin’s surface helps reduce inflammation, promote healing and encourage the skin to increase blood flow.
The Benefits of Gua Sha
If you’ve ever told yourself you could never get those chiseled cheekbones or sharp jawline, think again. This non-invasive, at-home treatment can stimulate circulation, soften fine lines and wrinkles, decrease that morning puffiness, brighten your complexion all while sculpting your facial muscles.
How To Use Gua Sha As A Facial Tool
Before starting the treatment, it’s important that you do your skin care routine. From here, I recommend using your favourite facial oil so the stone has something smooth to glide on. The best method is to use gentle pressure as you apply the stone to your face. Then, use even strokes against your skin in an upward motion, while sculpting out your brow bone, cheekbone and jawline. The purpose of this treatment is to promote the skin’s healing by stimulating lymphatic flow and drainage. This process releases the excess fluids that care the cause of your skin’s dehydration, puffiness and dual complexion.
It can take awhile to get the hang of it, so here’s a tutorial on how to practise Gua Sha.
Practising Gua Sha On Your Body
This lovely tool doesn’t just benefit your face, but your body too! Using Gua Sha on your body relieves any built-up tension, boosts blood circulation and helps break up fascia. Fascia is the body’s connective tissues around the muscles, if its too tense, it can effect optimal blood circulation. I like to use my Gua Sha tool on my shoulders and soles of my feet, as I hold most of my tightness there.
