When we decided to include Ame in our Winterlicious tour, my first thought was ‘what am I going to wear?’ Being part of the Ink Entertainment Group, I knew a visit to Ame would require my best effort at being chic, trendy and a whole bunch of other things that I would never include in my ‘About Me’. Always one to rise to a challenge, I poured myself into a dress, hoisted up the girls and heeled up. A quick stop to grab Labers in a cab and we were ready to be part of ‘the scene’… or at least give it a shot.
Turns out our eagerness turned into earliness and the one thing you never want to be at a place like Ame is early… it’s just not cool. So we popped into neighbouring ‘Milagro’. A View The Vibe favourite; gotta love those ‘nothing’s that bad when you’ve had one of these’ mojitos.
After some time had passed, we were finally feeling confident enough to slip and slide the few doors down to Ame. On entering there is an obvious sense of luxury. Dark wood accented with vibrant, kimono fabrics make for a modern but truly beautiful space. We continued to marvel as we waited at the bar for our third and final diner where we were sure to warm up with a martini. I opted for a pear concoction that was surprisingly not at all sweet. It was in fact salty… and I liked it. It was like an Asian twist on a margarita.

Once seated, we met our lovely and very attentive server Claudia. She gave us a thorough tour of the Winterlicious menu and made her recommendations which we happily followed. First up, salmon sashimi and unagi maki. Fresh, simple, delightful. Then came the hot dishes; Miso marinated bass and teriyaki Cornish hen. Now I would never normally order meat when I’m out for sushi, I’m all about the Omegas. But we ordered the hen on Claudia’s suggestion and it did not disappoint. It was tender, flavourful and something I would definitely order again. The fish was flaky and moist and I rather enjoyed the competitive nature of 3 forks in once dish… it was every man for himself! Another dish worth a mention was the Morimo miso mushroom salad. Light, flavourful and the perfect accompaniment to our existing dishes, it was definitely a group favourite.
I have to take this opportunity to thank the Ame staff and our wonderful friend Vic, for putting together an array of desserts as a belated birthday treat for me (gotta love drawn out birthday celebrations!) It was the perfect end to a delightful dinner although I didn’t go too crazy on the sweet stuff as we had some partying to get to…
Ame is deservedly touted as a trendy spot but it does not disappoint in the food department. Recommended as the perfect place for groups of friends as it provides a very social dining experience and the opportunity to stay late and enjoy the DJ.
Ame is located at 19 Mercer Street, Toronto.
