The famous poet Robert Frost (otherwise known as RoFro) once wrote, “An hour of winter day might seem too short/ To make it worth life’s while to wake and sport” in his piece Winter’s Eden. Contemplate that for a second. And then, after that, try and remember when the last time was you read Robert Frost in a fashion article? We’re starting a trend here people.
But seriously, RoFro highlights a point. With the few precious hours/ minutes/ seconds we have of proper daylight during that endless abyss we Torontonians call winter, sometimes it hardly seems worth it get your fashion game on. Take a look outside. It’s cold, it’s dark, and that understandably makes you lazy. Why get all dressed up if nobody is actually going to see the fruits of your effort? Don’t let this mentality discourage you, ladies. Always remember, good style never goes into hibernation. To help you get out of your sartorial cave, here are five winter fashion trends to help keep you fresh and fabulous all through the down and out dark months.
The “man coat” look is in keeping with an overall trend this year of statement making outerwear. Basically, you want to look like you’re wearing your boyfriend’s/ brother’s/ a Soviet prison guard’s coat. Take a note from the boys: size matters. Length should be below the knee, sleeves big and billowy (while still ending at the wrist), shoulders rounded, and an overall very loose fit. This über-vampy Chanel piece also pays homage to the punk trend that is ruling the runways of 2013 as well.
Another statement-making outwear staple of 2013, there were more capes on the catwalks this year than there were at the last Comic-Con. Fashion houses like DKNY, Chanel, and even super exclusive Brit designer Antonio Berardi were advocating the look on their runways this season. To keep things sophisticated and on point, stick with a black cape on top of #AllBlackEverything and some leather trousers or leggings.
An injection of spring/ summer brightness into the usually neutral and demure colourscape of winter fashion, pink is appearing long before the thaw this year and we think it’s fabulous. What is fashion if not having a little fun? We’ll never know which poor Muppet had to die for this amazeballs Carven coat, but it is seriously rocking the fur and oversized outwear trends that we also just can’t get enough of this season.
If you are the proud owner of 101 dalmatians (read: animal hoarder), you may want to lock your doors and install a security system as over-the-top fur is huge for winter 2013. Elegant and classically associated with the luxurious lady, everything from fur wraps to full-blow high-fashion pimp jackets are totally on point this year. Marc Jacobs in particular has released a stunning set of oversized fur coats and accessories that are halfway between Elizabeth Taylor and Lindsay Lohan as Liz Taylor, if you catch our drift.
The punk trend strikes again. The combination of tartan and black leather is a total holler at British punk from years long past, only to be seen on every catwalk from Chanel, to Saint Laurent, to Mulberry. Want to look really punk and rail against the mainstream? Go with a blue tartan like this Alberta Ferretti statement coat.
