The Day of the Emoji
First getting its start in 2002, World Emoji Day originally started as a day when Apple premiered its iCal calendar application. Since then, World Emoji Day has been recognized as an unofficial holiday for Apple and is also the brainchild of Jeremy Burge, an emoji historian and founder of Emojipedia, an emoji reference website which documents the meaning and common usage of emoji characters.
Burge created World Emoji Day on the 17th of July, centred on how the calendar emoji is shown on iPhones. Since 2017 Apple has used World Emoji day to announce upcoming expansions to the range of emojis on iOS.
For the first World Emoji Day, Burge said there were no formal plans with what Emoji Day was exactly except for that date.
“It basically consisted of me writing that the 17th of July would be World Emoji Day.” Barg said.
Not too long after the first year, World Emoji Day took off.
“I saw people had emoji parties, at a lot of offices, people were having emoji-themed days and were wearing emoji merchandise to work.”
Now every year, millions of Apple users look forward to this day, as not just to get an idea of the kind of changes that will come to the iPhone emojis but also a day to strictly only communicate with emojis.
And to that, we say 🥂.
