Whether we like it or not the cold of winter is here. For a lot of people including me, winter is one of the worst seasons. That’s too bad because we’re Canadians and we’ve got long winters. I think the key to having a good winter is initiative. Everything’s cold and it’s harder to just enjoy the outdoors. So, you’ve to really got out of your way to find things to do. So, this year I’m going to really try to shake the winter blues and find as many ways to make the season fun as I can. For now, I’ve got four for now but I’m sure that more will come.

Here are 4 ways to get through winter in Toronto
Skate
I think that this is the year I get into ice skating. I thought I’d get into it when I was a kid, but you know how it goes. You get busy with school and work and things fall by the wayside. That all changes this year. Toronto’s got lots of places to practice skating and I’m not just talking about Nathan Philips Square. Trying something new can be hard if there are a lot of people around so going out of your way might be great for getting a little privacy and seeing a new part of the city. The city’s got dozens of outdoor rinks (I don’t know why but outdoor just seems cooler to me). You find a list here.

Go to the Beaches
Ok I might regret this one because I really do think it’s one of Toronto’s best kept secrets. Go to the beach in the dead of January. Seriously. No is there so you’ve got plenty of space to be alone with your thoughts. I maintain that the view of Lake Ontario in the winter is when it’s at it’s best. The waves freeze in all kinds of interesting shapes. If you’re looking for ice sculptures the stretch of beach by the R.C Harris is the place to be.
Enjoy a Heated Outdoor Space
Now one Covid trend that might last is having an outdoor space heater. There’s something so cozy about hanging out on a cold clear winter’s night with friends in a backyard. Maybe you’ve got blankets and hot chocolate. Or maybe you’ve made some mulled wine (another thing I hope to try this winter). All the while you’re toasty warm because you’ve got one of those outdoor space heaters. Everyone wanted one last year, so they were hard to get.
Play in the Snow
Do you have kids or are you just young at heart? One thing I haven’t done in years is make a snow fort. I remember waking up on morning of the first snow of the season and rushing outside to see if we had packing snow. I find we only get it a few times a year. So, when we do, grab a couple of friends and a couple of shovels and head to the park for a Saturday afternoon. make two, split into teams and have a snowball fight.
