Gear up for a weekend that’s heavy on the relax-factor as you use the next few days to re-coop from a busy (and exhausting) holiday season. Enjoy exploring the city, chilling out at a local café, or taking in a taste of the outdoors as you get focused for a great 2015 ahead.
Mt. Seymour
Start off the New Year by slipping into some winter gear and heading up one of the local mountains for some quality R&R outdoors. There really isn’t an excuse given our proximity to three stellar snow-capped mountains. Choose from skiing Cypress, snowshoeing Mt. Seymour, or skating atop Grouse Mountain. You’ll work off some of the holiday excess in no time.
Mary Poppins
Catch one of the last remaining shows of the popular Broadway musical production of Mary Poppins at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. We caught the performance earlier last month and were impressed – a definite must-see if you can swing scoring tickets. Final show is this Sunday so whatever you do, don’t sleep on it.
Rio Theatre
Channel your inner Big Lebowski this Friday and beeline it to the Rio Theatre for a night of theatrical indulgence featuring the Coen Brother’s classic. Kick back, nosh on a bag of popcorn, and sip a brew as you watch Jeff Bridge’s genius unfold. Points given to anyone who shows up in their robe (seriously, if you show up in costume, you get $2.00 off admission).
Catch The Interview
In other cinematic news, catch a screening of the highly-contested The Interview and see for yourself what all the buzz is about. The Vancouver-filmed flick, featuring Seth Rogen and James Franco, will take over screens across the country on Friday, January 2 – with a handful of Lower Mainland spots on the selected theatre list published by CBC (a bit of a trek, but we’ll leave that to you).
Danica’s Baked Coffee Bar
Since popping by and chatting with the owner of Danica’s Baked Coffee Bar earlier this summer (they were undergoing a full overhaul and months away from opening), we’re happy to say that this 40-seat café is now open and serving up plenty of tasty treats you need to check out this weekend. Located next to Chambar in Gastown, it channels the perfect mix of European chic with NYC style (and has an endless array of breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner options). Pop in this weekend and see for yourself (they’re licensed too).
