It’s not just the new year according to the Gregorian calendar, but it’s about to be a new year according to the lunar calendar too! This time, Lunar New Year falls on January 22, which means there’s a string of festivities taking place next weekend. Here’s how you can celebrate Lunar New Year in Toronto and the GTA:
Yorkdale Shopping Centre
The shopping mall features an art installation in the Luxe Wing until January 29th. There are also activities like Sugar Painting, Echo Chinese Traditional Quartet and more on select days. You can also shop for LNY-themed clothing.
Scarborough Town Centre
STC is also having an art installation from January 18th to February 5rh. In addition to the nine-foot-rabbit display, visitors are also encouraged to check out the series of performances at the Centre Court.

Chinatown
The city’s Chinatown neighbourhood is pulling out all the stops on January 21 & 22 for LNY. Events are happening at both the Chinatown Centre and Dragon City Mall. It’s free to attend and starts at 5 pm.
Dragon Ball 2023
The annual benefit gala is taking place this year on January 21st, in support of the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care. It’s taking place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
Holts Café
Celebrate the special occasion with an afternoon tea experience at any of the Holts Café locations. The menu items include Pandan & Coconut flavoured Macaron, Crystal Shrimp Dumpling, Classic & Matcha Scone and more. There are different menu additions for the Bloor Street and Yorkdale locations.
The St. Regis Toronto
The Lunar New Year Afternoon Tea service features sweet and savoury bites, like Pork Belly Bao with pickled ginger, Peking Duck Mini Parcels, Mandarin Orange Posset, and Raspberry Lychee Tart. It runs from January 13th-29th and reservations can be made online.

Ladurée Canada
The patisserie brand is offering a Lunar New Year macaron box, which can be filled with eight macarons. There’s also the option to customize it with symbolic rabbit or luxurious gold leaf detailing.
Enjoy a LNY meal
Celebrate with a lovely meal from dining outlets in Toronto, like Hong Shing, which has a special Lunar New Year menu.
Fête Chinoise Signature Gala
The award-winning event is held every year to celebrate Chinese culture and features live entertainment, F&B, activations and music. It’s being held at the Shangri-La Hotel on January 28 and tickets can be purchased via the website.
Vaughan Mills
The festivities begin on January 22 at Vaughan Mills, featuring a kick-off celebration with cultural dances, music performances, and interactive activities. The Event Court will be transformed into a landscape that resembles the traditional Chinese gardens and there will be a Wishing Tree experience. For every wish made, $1 will be donated to Mackenzie Health. The celebrations will be hosted until February 5.
