There’s nothing like treating yourself to a nice meal when life gets too busy to cook for yourself. It’s not only a chance to try new foods but it’s a great way to support local restaurants. According to OpenTable Canada, Canadians have been doing a lot of that this year. In fact, there was even an increase in the number of seated diners compared to last year.
Here’s what OpenTable found out about Canadians and their dining habits
Compared to last year OpenTable revealed that there was a 79% increase in seated diners between January and October of this year. There was also a 6% increase from 2019. “Given the macroeconomic conditions, it has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm for spending in local restaurants, even on usually less popular days like Monday. We expect that Canadians’ desire to dine out will continue into 2023,” Matt Davis, OpenTable’s Country Director, said in a press release statement.
The data also showed that Canadians sought out different cuisines, having 142 of them in 2022. Restaurant meals between $41 – $65 per person were the most popular, signalling the desire for revenge dining following restaurant closures and restrictions. Additionally, they found that there was an increase in online reservations by 45%, while walk-in diners dropped by 9%.

All of this data and information was gathered by OpenTable by looking at seated diners from online, phone, and walk-in reservations. For the purpose of the report, the data was collected from January 1st to October 31st of 2022.
