The Aimia | AGO Photography Prize, Canada’s leading contemporary photography award, has announced its first-ever long list of 14 finalists and four Canadians made the cut. We’re rooting for a homegrown talent to take home the big prize, which is pretty substantial, if we do say so. $50,000? We’d run off to Costa Rica and start a commune with that kind of cash.
Founded in 2007, the Prize honours living artists whose work over the last 5 years has shown exceptional potential and is the first major art prize in the world to invite the public to choose its winners. The group of finalists includes artists from North and South America, Asia, Africa and Europe who have been nominated by leading Canadian and international experts in photography (curators, academics, artists). Of the 14 long list nominees, a short list of four artists, including at least one Canadian, will be selected by a jury of three experts headed by Lead Juror Elizabeth Smith, AGO Executive Director of Curatorial Affairs. These artists will receive a fully funded six-week residency in Canada with their work being exhibited in the AGO beginning September 11, 2013. The winner will be selected by public vote cast in the exhibit and online (beginning August 27, 2013) at aimiaagophotographyprize.com. The winner, who will be announced November 7, 2013, will receive the $50,000 Prize.
