An Ode to Movember

The annual moustache-fuelled fundraising event kicks off today, turning boys into men through the growth of patchy, above-the-lip facial hair. Movember, for the six of you who are rather unaware, is an endeavour that seeks to build community awareness surrounding men’s health (namely Prostate and Testicular Cancers and Mental Health), while at the same time heavily-raising funds for research.

As Canadians, we’re proud that our fair nation – the pioneers of woodsman chic, really – is one of the top Movember supporters. We’re also elated that we can let our inner lumberjacks out of the closet, if only for a month before we have to stash away the ‘staches and get back to bare business. But that’s all besides the point.

Throughout the month, countrymen far and wide will sprout their follicles and walk around proud, nodding at one another as they pass on the streets in the first few days of scratchy growth. Community events will help shape the fortunes of the fundraiser, while rooms stacked with moustached men will provide context for the cause: we’re all in this together.

So whether you think yourself a modern day Tom Selleck or Charlie Chaplin, Movember is the time to experiment with the crops on your visage. Best part? While your chia pettian facial growth may be frowned upon 11 months out of the year, in this, the 11th month, you’re a hero of handsomeness. Stand proud, you hairy-lipped Dirty Sanchez. Get involved at the office, with your sports team, or even your gamer group. Let the peach fuzz fly while you skyrocket your funds raised into that big, beautiful blue sky.

There’s not much about Movember that hasn’t been said before, so instead, we’d like to take a mo’ to celebrate all our MoBros and MoHos… er… MoSisters (sorry, rhyming got the best of us) through the manliest of literary prose. A poem, obviously…

Hairy headed blokes abound
Nothing but wind through whiskers create sound
Through affable endeavours we see wealth
Bestowed upon those helping men’s health
