It’s that time of year again: winter. The season that Canada is famous for but which is admittedly terrible unless you’re sitting in a hot tub staring at the snow falling softly on a mountain – but that’s only a real thing in made-for-TV movies and in travel brochures for Whistler. For the average Canadian, especially the city folk, winter means boots destroyed by salt, slush soaked socks, and endless Netflix marathons. Any semblance of a tan has faded by now, and 8 weeks is far too long to wait for sunshine and a little warmth… but vacations are expensive… right?
As much as I’d like to think that constantly tweeting at Flight Centre will eventually earn me an all expenses paid vacation to paradise with my boyfriend, it’s more likely that if I want to escape the polar vortex I’m going to have to work out how to afford one on my own.

If you’ve got a job where you can travel without giving much notice, buying a last minute all inclusive vacation online is your best bet to save money. In fact, if you’re willing to go based on the website, you’re going to save around $500 to $700 per person. If you’re willing to leave tomorrow, Sell Off Vacations could have me in Acapulco, Mexico drinking a cocktail by end of business on Wednesday for $500 with taxes and meals.
Seven days of sun and sand is perfect, but leaving tomorrow isn’t a possibility for the average person, unless you’re also okay with losing your job. If you want to take advantage of a great last minute deal try planning your vacation without actually planning it: Take a week off work but avoid the busy season, which means you’ll need to steer clear of Family Day, reading week, and March break in order to get the best deal on your trip. Then book your trip 1 to 2 days before your, now official, week off of work. Now you’ve got a spontaneous trip to somewhere beautiful and tropical where people don’t even know what a polar vortex is.
The best websites for last minute deals vary, but when you’re looking to book be sure to check out Sell Off Vacations, Red Tag, itravel2000.com, and even Groupon has vacation deals now.
The options are limitless if you’re willing to be spontaneous or even plan on your spontaneity. But don’t forget to pack lightly as airlines will get you on fees if your bag is oversized or if you’ve got a second bag. Let’s be real… you don’t need anything more than a bikini or a pair of swim shorts anyway… right?
