This year marks a major milestone: the 10th anniversary of Canada’s 100 Best, a list that has, for better or worse, shaped how Canadians dine. It has propelled chefs into national stardom, created destination restaurants in unexpected places, and pushed the industry to raise the bar again and again.

“The list was never meant to be definitive. It was meant to get people talking—to guide, to inspire, to challenge the status quo,” says Canada’s 100 Best Editor-in-Chief Jacob Richler. “And the fact that people still care, still argue, still celebrate it 10 years in? That tells me we’re doing something right.”

Toronto, still a culinary juggernaut
With 28 of the 100 restaurants located in Toronto, the city continues to dominate the national conversation—but not without competition. Montreal, Vancouver, and even smaller communities like Flesherton, Owen Sound, and Collingwood have earned a seat at the table this year.
One of the few constants in the list’s decade-long history is Alo, which has ranked in the Top 3 for eight consecutive years.

“We don’t open restaurants for the list,” says Alo’s Chef Patrick Kriss. “But it’s definitely an honour. And more than anything, it’s a reflection of the team’s work and the consistency we strive for every day.”

How the list is judged
The rankings are compiled through a national panel of over 150 judges—industry professionals, chefs, restaurateurs, critics, and seasoned diners. The judging process is anonymous, peer-based, and highly localized, ensuring that regional diversity isn’t overlooked.
Richler notes, “This year we had the highest number of judges ever. That expanded perspective helped highlight more regional gems without losing sight of consistency and excellence.”
