Canyon Creek is making some big changes and it is absolutely worth checking out – maybe even over and over. A couple of weeks ago the fabulous team at Canyon Creek Front Street invited myself and fellow foodie Stella Yu to check out their new summer menu, which is amazingly light and delicious (but full of bacon). Their new tag line, “Canyon Creek, we’re not just steak,” is truly reflected in their new menu.
So before I get into the delicious new menu items we tried, let’s just take a minute to congratulate them on their constant efforts to put out creative wine programs and promotions. This summer is no different, with the latest being the #FlashYourGlass selfie contest which started on July 9th and is running until August 19th. One lucky winner is announced weekly and wins $100 for posting the best selfie with their glass of Ravenswood wine at Canyon Creek. Then on August 20th, one of the many $100 winners will win the grand prize: a dinner party for 10 people prepped and executed by Executive Chef Dorian King, plus a brand new BBQ. Seriously though? Why not enter? Wine, money, friends, food, and a BBQ – sounds like a recipe for happiness to me! (Click here to enter.)
Okay, now onto the food. First off, the lovely Chef Dorian King actually came over to sit with us and make the first course – an avocado and bacon salad. The name says it all; those two ingredients will make anyone’s mouth water. But then add Campari tomatoes (which, FYI, are extra sweet), blue cheese, sweet red onions and a creamy bacon vinaigrette, and it’s almost like a BLT minus the bread – which in my head is called perfection.

Next up came the Jail Island Salmon Salad, which was probably my favourite of the four dishes we tried. A mix of greens, radishes, cranberries, goat cheese and even shrimp, this salad is outstanding and I will have it again. Watch the video and drool… You will want to try it, too!
Course number three was the fish tacos, which we recently included in our best tacos in Toronto article. Why? Because they are damned good and taste truly authentic. I think the fact they use corn tortillas from Torito in Kensington Market is a big part of this, but I also enjoy that they’re simple and use only the ingredients that fish tacos should use.
Last we tried the Brown Butter Pickerel over savoy cabbage and basmati rice. Again, really venturing away from the norm of what we would expect from Canyon Creek, this dish was full of eclectic flavours all brought together through a bacon and sherry brown butter. Yes, more bacon (but nobody is complaining).
It is visible that Chef Dorian King is creative and really bringing Canyon Creek to another level, which for a chain restaurant is nice to see. I am not one to promote the many chains of the world, however, in Canyon Creek’s case, it’s obvious they take a lot of pride in developing dishes that will satisfy all – even the pickiest of foodies.
