Yesterday, Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie and the City Councillor of Scarborough-Rouge Park announced the 25 recipients of the Toronto Community Champion Award. The Toronto Community Champion Award was given to organizations that offered exceptional support for the residents of Toronto throughout the pandemic. The ceremony took place at the Toronto Reference Library. Keep reading to find out how the recipients were chosen.
About the Toronto Community Champion Award
This Award was launched as part of the Canadian government’s Stronger TOgether initiative. To start, the residents were asked to nominate organizations that made a positive change in their community during COVID-19. The recipients were then chosen by a selection committee. This was comprised of community leads from Volunteer Toronto, United Way Greater Toronto, Native Child and Family Services of Toronto and city staff. The organizations that were selected prioritized community service and had an inclusive and productive approach to their work.
Recognition was given to organizations that helped out vulnerable residents like people with disabilities, newcomers, and the elderly. The committee honoured organizations that helped minimize social isolation and helped people to get access to vaccination.
