Royalty isn’t just for the royal anymore. Sure, royal fever continues to captivate, from drama both real and serialized, but there’s also a more approachable and meaningful kind of royalty that has found its way into our everyday lives. What started as a compliment, a way to empower someone as a King or Queen, has become so much more. Crown Royal wants to bring this new definition of royalty to life as Modern Royalty, with the help of Toronto-based artist Justin Broadbent. Together, they’re showing the royal ways we celebrate one another, the currency of self-love, and how generosity is the new-gold standard.

Crown Royal x Justin Broadbent
Justin Broadbent is a multi-disciplinary artist who lives and works in Toronto whose illustration style and keen sense of design have led to many iconic collaborations, now with Crown Royal.
Justin’s free-hand illustration style was the perfect way to introduce Modern Royalty. With his unique visual style, Justin playfully reimagines what something ‘royal’ means in our everyday lives and defines it by how much we care for and treasure it.
We heard from Justin on how he brought his vision to life and what Modern Royalty means to him: “My drawings always start in the physical on paper, which connects to meaning and place. I was trying to create a feeling while drawing, of liveliness, humour, and little moments of joy.”
“The meaning of royalty has changed a lot. The new crown bearers are no longer Monarchy. The castles in the sky are no longer inhabited. The new currency is meaning, place and generosity. The old way of living is done. Royalty is now a celebration of one another. Royalty is your homies. Royalty is perseverance and unity. Royalty is self-love and respect.”
