Toronto’s large-scale theatre scene, anchored by the iconic Mirvish Productions, continues its spectacular fall lineup. As the weather cools, the city’s most storied stages are set for a gripping mix of classic revivals, Canadian premieres, and feel-good favourites. From the shamelessly scandalous tales of Old Hollywood’s mainstays in Ava: The Secret Conversations, to a larger-than-life production of some of Queen’s biggest hits in We Will Rock You, Mirvish stages are sizzling this season. Here are the must-see shows gracing Mirvish theatres this fall.
Ava: The Secret Conversations
Mirvish invites the audience to delve into the glamorous, scandalous, and tumultuous world of Hollywood legend Ava Gardner in the Canadian premiere of Ava: The Secret Conversations. Emmy and Academy Award-nominated star Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey) captivates with her portrayal of Gardner. Backed by an impressively intricate set, the compelling play is based on the star’s revealing, late-in-life interviews with writer Peter Evans, as she dictated her no-holds-barred (f-bomb-filled) autobiography. Playing at the smaller, more intimate CAA Theatre, it offers a fascinating, personal glimpse behind the silver screen.

The Sound of Music
A beloved musical classic returns to deliver warm and fuzzy feels for the holiday season. The Sound of Music tells the romantic story of Maria and the von Trapp family and is directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray, The Coast of Utopia). The audience can expect a refreshed take on the classic, driven by an exceptional cast, including Tony-nominated actress Christiane Noll as the powerful Mother Abbess. The timeless tale features the renowned Rodgers and Hammerstein score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.” This is one for the whole extended family.

We Will Rock You
If your idea of a day at the theatre includes rock music, theatrical haze, and strobe lighting, Mirvish has you covered. Featuring the legendary music of the band Queen, We Will Rock You is a futuristic, dystopian rock musical that tells the story of a group of bohemians trying to save rock and roll. The over-the-top production is filled with hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” and, of course, “We Will Rock You.” Expect a high-octane concert-like experience that celebrates one of the greatest bands in history, delivering a memorable performance – even for the self-proclaimed “non-theatre person” set of showgoers.

& Juiet
A constant crowdpleaser, high-energy jukebox musical & Juliet shakes up Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by exploring an alternative ending where Juliet didn’t die, but embarked on an empowering fresh start (yes!). Featuring a chart-topping score of beloved pop anthems written by Max Martin (the genius behind hits for Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and The Backstreet Boys), & Juliet is a celebration of self-discovery, friendship, and second chances. With unstoppable girl power front and centre – driven by hits like “Since U Been Gone” (Kelly Clarkson), “Roar” (Katy Perry), and “Confident” (Demi Lovato) – it’s the ultimate feel-good musical for a modern audience of eclectic theatregoers.

The Woman in Black
If intense theatrical horror is more your thing than feel-good musicals, The Woman in Black, the West End’s (London) longest-running spine-chiller, hits the Canadian stage for the first time. Adapted from Susan Hill’s best-selling novel, the two-actor production follows a lawyer obsessed with a spectral curse (the woman in black), who must recount his terrifying story to a skeptical young actor. It begins as a simple re-enactment but quickly transforms into a gripping journey into a chilling world of paranormal horror that will leave audience members looking over their shoulders long after the curtain closes.
