Did You Know You Can Make Your Own Custom Lipstick in Toronto?

I’ve spent years researching and watching YouTube reviews in the hopes of coming across the perfect nude lipstick, and years later…I’ve still got nothing. If you find yourself in a similar situation, I know you understand the frustration. Believe it or not, finding the perfect shade of lipstick is harder than it seems. There are so many factors to consider like skin and lip tone, whether it’s too shiny, too matte or too much of one colour…the list goes on! When Bite Beauty Lip Lab reached out to me about visiting their downtown Toronto location, I was thrilled! I knew my search for the perfect lipstick was soon coming to an end because at Lip Lab, I was finally going to create my own personalized lipstick! Bite Beauty Lip Lab

Located at 678 Queen St W., Toronto opened the original flagship Bite Beauty Lip Lab back in 2016! Now, you can find locations in New York, California and Las Vegas! In just 4 easy steps, you can create your own custom lipstick and best of all, you can also plan an event with your best friends! Toronto’s store manager, Hedyeh Sarkhil led me through my session and I couldn’t have asked for anything better!

My Lip Lab Experience

When I first walked into Lip Lab, I was drawn to the shelves that were stocked up with their colourful pigments! Lip Lab just re-opened under Ontario’s stage 1 plan and they’re following all Covid-19 protocols! Everything was extremely clean, I had to sign-in, answer health and safety questions as well as continuously sanitize my hands!

The lovely Hedyeh directed me towards the the high-top counters where I took a seat in their comfy chairs and began my consultation!

Consultation

Hedyeh asked me exactly what I was looking for! I wish I could say I’m the type of person to go for a bold lip, but I love my nudes. I explained that I didn’t want anything too pink or too brown, just the perfect mix!

Mixing

She took out her white measuring mixing sheet and a sheet with 6 lip stencils. This gave us the perfect amount of space and opportunity to play around with colours! She grabbed a brown, light pink and dark pink pigment from the jars and placed them on the measuring sheet that calculated each pigment ratio into grams.

From here, she asked me what type of finish I’d like to try. I could choose from matte (more of a demi-matte), satin, luminous and sheer. I decided to go with luminous since I wanted a glossy lip for summer!

It took 3 mixes to find my perfect nude! After each mix, I had to quickly step out of the store and remove my mask to try it out with a handheld mirror. Honestly, this was great because you could see the lipstick in natural lighting!

Must Add: the colours look way darker on the sheet than the actually are, so trust your colour experts and what they say before trying it on!

Prep & Molding

Then, Hedyeh re-made the colour but with the exact quantity that would fit the mold. I was now able to pick from their 4 flavours: mint, lime, vanilla, or mango. I picked vanilla! Once it was all in the jar, she placed it in a high-speed mixture that turned it into a liquid that was poured into their metal lipstick molds.

Once in the mold, the lipstick sat on an ice-cold metal top for about 4-5 minutes until the lipstick was completely formed. After the time passed, Hedyeh carefully opened the mold and placed the container over the lipstick.

Must Add: Bite Beauty Lip Lab colour pigments and finishes are made with no preservatives and fruit butters, beeswax and agave! All products are made right at the back of their store!

Final Touches

Beside making the lipstick, the best part of the experience was being able to name my lipstick. Hedyeh recommended thinking of what the lipstick reminded me of so, I decided on “Nude Goddess” and added my Virgo symbol!
