I think every girl recalls important makeup milestones from their youth. I remember “borrowing” my mother’s red lipstick as a wee one to impress the little boy next door. At that point in time makeup seemed a bit like sorcery to me. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered that some aspects seemed to be off limits. Recalling my first solo mission into the drugstore’s makeup aisle as a teen, I experienced a bit of a rude awakening. As excited as I was to get my hands on all the magical power makeup seemed to possess, something seemed to be severely lacking… options.
There were foundations, powders, and products aplenty, but most didn’t even begin to resemble anything close to my actual skin tone. This was extremely frustrating to my hormonally-driven teenage self, and even sometimes still to this day. Although, many brands are starting to understand the importance (and potential monetary gains) of providing products for ladies all of shades.

The latest in this diversification movement is DooBop beauty, which besides having a catchy name is the latest (and perhaps greatest?) beauty site focused on women of colour. Plus it’s endorsed by Oprah, which is basically royal assent. One of the great things about the website is the attention to detail. Products are curated by a variety of industry expects, with a particular focus on issues pertinent to ethnic women.
The brand has also managed to set itself apart by securing exclusive, often hard to find products and partnering with entrepreneurs worldwide. Hair care brand SkimDo was started solely by a woman who couldn’t find any products to moisturize her natural hair, so she created her own. In fact, you’ll find many other products with similar stories spread throughout the site.
After spending some time scouring DooBop, it became clear to me that while the site is aimed at women of colour the mandate for the brand encompasses quality and accessibility for all women. At the end of the day it doesn’t get much more beautiful than that.
