If you’re someone that’s immersed in Japanese pop culture or an anime fan then you might want to check out TIFF’s new series. TIFF’s new series called POP Japan celebrates all things Japanese film and art. Anime and manga are not only popular in East Asian countries but in other parts of the world. Japanese film and art tell powerful and entertaining stories that are loved by many. As part of the TIFF series, there will be film screenings, art programming and more.
About the POP Japan series
You can catch the series from May 10 to June 27 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Visitors will be able to experience three film series. The first will spotlight works by Japanese filmmaker, Seijun Suzuki, with six newly restored 35mm prints. The second is the World of Anime, which will highlight a collection of influential anime films. The last series is in honour of the “godfather of animation” and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki.
“We’re excited to present a diverse selection of films in this series, many of which started on the cultural margins like Suzuki’s pulpy pop art noirs to anime that exploded into the North American mainstream in the ’90s,” said Robyn Citizen, Director of Festival Programming & Cinematheque, TIFF.

As a part of the Silver Screenings A Silent Voice: The Movie directed by Yamada, one of anime’s few women filmmakers, is screening on June 30, free to those 65+.
The city’s very own Minami restaurant is also the Official Hospitality Sponsor for POP Japan in Toronto. The event is free to TIFF members. Programme tickets are available online and public tickets are available starting today.
