Perpetually blurring the boundaries between acoustic and electronic instruments, Cinna Peyghamy’s tombak, a traditional Persian goblet drum, is enhanced by the sonic possibilities of a modular synthesizer. Similarly, Mahmood Schricker has transformed his setar into an electronic instrument, integrating minimal ambient music with noise and effects to expand the possibilities for Persian music. Naghmeh Farahmand has adapted to many styles of playing, alongside traditional Iranian, as one of Canada’s top percussionists. With her mesmerizing voice, Neda Mohamadpour is one of Toronto’s up-and-coming vocalists. Together, these four artists will take the audience on a sonic journey backed by the live visuals of multidisciplinary artist and designer Andrew O’Connor.Experimental Link Series contemplates the Persian-Canadian experience by reinvigorating, re-exploring and re-imagining Persian traditional music within contemporary and cosmopolitan Toronto by inviting different musicians from the diaspora to collaborate and perform together. The series will explore connections between identity, culture and musical creation.
