You’re not the only one who is seriously missing their visits to the nail salon. While we know there are much more serious issues to deal with, the practice of a regular manicure has, up until lockdown, been sacred and something we looked forward to. If your nails have been taking the brunt of everything we’re faced with, then it’s time to sit yourself down and give yourself an at-home manicure and no, I don’t mean just painting your nails. If you’re a manicure person then you know that’s simply a polish change and not what I’m talking about. It’s time for an at-home mani.
Painting your nails is a big part of a manicure but the nail prep and cuticle maintenance is the bigger picture. Keeping our hands hydrated and healthy is extremely important, especially since we’re washing and sanitizing our hands more than ever. You and your hands deserve a pamper sesh so this weekend, why not try your hand (get it?) at giving yourself the perfect at-home mani.

Clip Your Claws
If your nails need a trim, the first step here is to use a nail clipper to trim them and then use a nail file to smooth everything out. Look for a nail file that has different buffing textures so you can ensure there are no ridges or rough parts. There’s nothing worse than finishing an at-home mani and realizing there’s a snag!
my pick: Revlon X Barbie Nail Clipper
Cuticle Remover
Once your nails are at your desired length, apply a cuticle remover gel onto clean nails. Allow the formula to soak in for a few seconds and then get to work. Push back your cuticles and use a manicure tool to remove any dead skin or gunk from the surface. Finish by wiping the nail clean with some nail polish remover on a cotton round.
My Pick: Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover
Start Painting
If the idea of painting your nails makes you nervous, know that it’s easier and simpler than you may think. My suggestion is to paint your less-dominant hand first. That way you won’t mess up the polish on your dominant hand when you switch. Apply a base coat to ensure your nails won’t get stained and after each application, give yourself a few minutes to allow the polish to start to set up. It’s no secret that there a zillion nail polish brands and shades out there so have some fun, grab a few and find your new fave!
My Pick: Revlon Ultra HD Snap Nail Colour
Top It Off
Happy with your colour? Good! Top it off with a quick-dry topcoat because even though we’re at home, it doesn’t mean we have time to sit around with wet nails. Once you’re all dry and good to go, apply cuticle oil to replenish moisture and help your nails stay strong and healthy.
