When most people think about Niagara, they think about the waterfalls and the kid-friendly attractions that surround them. Or, they think about the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, surrounded by vineyards and quaint local shops. But, not far away from the tourist traps, a smaller community boasts a big draw: one of the best restaurants in the country. The property itself is a one-stop destination for a weekend getaway, and the proprietors even boast a bake shop that serves sweet treats and lunches while the restaurant is closed. It’s a local gem in every sense of the phrase, down to the ingredients grown right on the property. Jordan’s Pearl Morissette is a must-visit for those looking for an enriching staycation.
Pearl Morissette, the winery
The origins of Pearl Morissette start with the winery, which produces some of Canada’s most unique blends. The luxurious nature of each glass contrasts only the affordable price points, and everything is made on the multiple-acre property. There’s even a “library,” where bottles made in previous years are stored for tasting and studying purposes. The winery has called Jordan home for over a decade, and at the helm is Francois Morissette, who studied his grapes in the south of France. After time in Europe and in Quebec, he partnered with Toronto-based developer Mel Pearl to dream up the current estate.

Roughly six years ago, chefs Eric Robertson and Daniel Hadida had an idea. Both sought to brought the European ideals of dining to their native Ontario, and the Jordan property that housed a winery was, apparently, the perfect fit.

The result is a tasting menu that cracks the top five of Canada’s 100 Best for good reason: whatever isn’t grown on the property is sourced from community farmers, creating a sustainable offering that explodes with one-of-a-kind flavour. It’s proof that Robertson and Hadida are masters of their craft, and the menu changes regularly throughout every season to reflect what is being grown (in a thoughtful, environmentally friendly way) on the property.
The restaurant newly launched a tour of the gardens, and the opportunity to wander through herbs and vegetables with the chef is unmissable, making the experience all the more special. It fosters an even greater appreciation for the flavours in each dish, crafted only with ingredients that are local to Ontario and meat that is thoughtfully acquired and, in the chickens’ case, kept on the property.
It’s a true gift to understand the intricate nature of understanding how a herb can mimic the taste of an orange or a lemon, and to be guided through each plant with an expert like Robertson. Sitting at the table, each course is thoughtful and brilliant, an art in the truest sense of the word (and, of course, vegetarians can be accommodated). Anyone with a culinary interest would be thoroughly impressed with the entire experience, from the unique presentation to the mouthwatering courses (which can include a wine pairing as well as a cheese pairing for an additional cost. Both are wonderful).
The country feel is directly contrasted by the rustic yet modern interior space, but the full ambiance is nothing short of spectacular. If the Michelin Guide was ever to expand outside the city of Toronto, Restaurant Pearl Morissette is, undoubtedly, any inspector’s first stop.

The masterminds behind the restaurant also run a bakeshop a stone’s throw from the property, in nearby Jordan Village. It operates with the same ethos as the restaurant, and fresh-baked goodies include breads and desserts. There are lunch options, too, like sandwiches and salads, and the menu is jam-packed with ingredients sourced from the property’s garden and nearby farms. It’s the perfect spot to pick up lunch before a winery tour or before a walk through Jordan Village.
Staying on the property
Pearl Morissette’s website directs visitors to The Orchard Villa, located at 2393 Red Maple Avenue. It’s just a three-minute drive from the property, and the gorgeous villa houses up to 12 people for $600 per night. It’s simple yet modern, and the interior is drenched with natural light. What’s more, it’s nestled on a huge property that’s perfect for throwing a football or soaking up some sun.
