As the demand increases for a decent latte, so do the skills of making latte art. Vv Magazine contributor, Kassandra Lee, searched high and low for some of the best latte designs by some of the best baristas in Toronto.
A few years ago, latte art was something unheard of in this city, but now? The cup of art in Toronto has runneth over with beautiful and complex designs. Of course, many still agree that making a good cup of espresso is an art within itself, but there’s something telling about a perfectly designed latte.
Here are some of our favourites:

Tokyo Smoke
Meet Toronto’s best of the best when it comes to latte art: Barista Brian. Formerly at Coffee Bar and currently at Tokyo Smoke, he’s known for his whimsical foam designs, and has attracted the attention of celebrities like Will Smith and True Blood’s Rutina Wesley, capturing their essence in espresso while shooting movies locally. His designs range from portraits of customers to surrealist paintings to unicorns. If you stop by to visit him, be sure to use his hashtag #BaristaBrian.
Mercury Espresso Bar
You might need your imagination for these designs but if you stare long enough, you’ll notice the fire-breathing dragons or phoenix birds this shop is known to serve up. You might need to be patient as you wait through the long line-ups, but it’s so worth watching one of these baristas make four separate pours to create the perfect design for you.
Manic Coffee
If you’re a maniac for the perfect balance of espresso and milk, look no further. These lattes are beautiful like a swan – literally. These baristas know how to make the right pour so you get a perfect swan or floral design in your latte every time.
Bulldog Coffee
The baristas at the Bull Dog Cafe often make lattes so pretty, you (almost) don’t want to drink them. Think rainbow flowers and hearts, and of course, bulldog faces.

Located right across from Trinity Bellwood’s Park, this little coffee shop is the perfect spot to pick up your perfectly curated latte.
Red Rocket Coffee
These baristas are known to personalize your lattes by playing around with syrup and other garnishes. They’re more than happy to design anything that’ll put a smile on your face.
