We would like to proudly introduce a rare mangosteen on the Toronto foodie scene. Someone who always files a recipe in her electronic box or what’s known as What’s on My Plate?, this marketer turned blogger doesn’t care too much about the calorie count, she just wants to share her edible experiences with you!
For the past four years, Tonya has had the opportunity to write about food. She has indulged in her share of homemade recipes that include wholesome and local ingredients, from preserves to sausages. After spending 6 years living in NYC and Paris abroad she rooted herself in the city of Toronto where she fulfilled her love for media and writing.
Yoga, dancing and watching Full House or Property Virgins takes top priority, but only after food, naturally. Let’s see what else Tonya has to say about her love affair with munching…

When and why did you start writing about food?
I started What’s On My Plate? back in October 2007, so we’re approaching the 5 year anniversary!

What do you love most about food?
I love how it brings people together. Also, that it is delicious.
What do you do when you aren’t writing about or eating food?
I’m likely making food! But if we’re not talking food-related I’m likely traveling to somewhere fun or just exploring Toronto.
Do you cook? If so, what’s your specialty? If not, why?
I cook at least 5 times a week and usually make some treats on top of that. I don’t know if I necessarily have a specialty because I really do make everything. If anything my speciality is my willingness/ability to try to make anything. I’ve made everything from bacon to jams to sausages to ice cream.
What’s your favourite type of food(s) and where do you go to get it?
Jamaican food is probably my favourite and luckily I get it at home! I’m also a fan of rotis from Island Foods, poutine from Poutini’s, fried chicken from Stockyards, burgers from Holy Chuck’s… I can play this game all day.
What’s your favourite hidden gem?
The $4.99 jerk chicken lunch special from Ritz.

What’s your go-to restaurant?
I most often find myself at Khao San Road or Pizzeria Libretto.
What’s the most memorable meal you’ve ever had?
I took my mom to Babbo in NYC for her birthday two years ago and I still dream of that meal. Highlights were the gnocchi with oxtail ragu and this amazing blueberry tart.
What’s one restaurant you have to try before you die?
I’m not sure it’s open yet…
