Mod has definitely experienced a resurgence in the last few seasons, with industry heavyweights like Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, and Saint Laurent all tapping the era as inspiration for recent collections. Short for “modernist” style, Mod is all about being fun, fresh, and fearless.
Originally born out of the youth movement of the 1960s, early adaptors of the style included the likes of beatniks and Teddy Boys, who used the radical look as a means of expressing society’s collective unrest at the time. Mainstream models like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton then went on to personify Mod in pop culture, bringing styles like miniskirts, graphic checkerboard patterns, and jailbird stripes into the public’s consciousness.

Other hallmarks of the style include explosions of primary palettes, colour-blocking, bold geometric and graphic prints, contrast taping, and super short A-line shapes. Today’s rendition of Mod pays homage to these elements, embracing its proclivity for sleek lines and simple silhouettes. Shift dresses, knee high boots, drop waist jackets, and flashy accessories are all ideal for repurposing the look in contemporary fashion. The key thing to keep in mind is that outfits should feel as modern as they do Mod. Happy swinging!
