We’re experiencing a bit of gelato fever today – which is interesting given it’s a cold treat. But that’s neither here nor there…
Our latest obsession in the realm of flavour-blasting beauty is Grinning Face, a darling li’l spot in the north end of Cabbagetown. This new shop (it opened on June 7th) promises “Non Dairy Gelato Goodness.” That’s a hefty claim given non-dairy foods that should be dairy-laden are usually as appealing as Kirstie Alley in a bikini.

But they achieve gourmet glory by using the one lactose-free milk we can totally get behind: that of Cocos nucifera… or coconut for you lackadaisical laymen.
We tried the Roasted Banana derivation on a recent trip to Grinning Face. Upon the first scoop sliding down our gullets we started to feel a tingling sensation in our nether regions typically reserved for the bedroom. This sh*t be cray! Our second spoonful was as magical as the first – a sensation rarely mimicked by mouthful. Rest assured, we did our due diligence, and can confidently convey that each of the 500 millilitres of the $12 tub was as glorious as the one before.
If by happenstance you pass Grinning Face on your way home this evening, you’ll likely find us bugging the shop-keep for samples of the Salted Caramel and Madagascar Vanilla and Bourbon – or maybe just a spoonful of each of the 6 or so rotating flavours that were laboriously crafted in-house.
Home-made, lactose-free, gelato lovin’. As elusive as the Holy Grail, but found in Cabbagetown.
