Christmas is really for the children — or so the marketing companies would have us believe. So strong is our society’s insistence that the holiday season yields childhood magic that now we see virtually all families, regardless of faith or cultural background, giving their little ones presents on the big day. We’ve heard that Christmas originally had some greater meaning though really, in the wake of kid-targeted television ads and cries for iPhone 6s every 20 minutes, who can remember anymore? It’s probably Oprah’s birthday or something.
Sacrilege aside, Christmas is truly the most indomitable time of the retail year. This spells big money for the Canadian economy, with Christmas spending expected to rise 4.6 percent over last December for a national total of $46.8 billion (according to Colliers International). The hottest children’s toys operate much like fashion: everything is based on trends; it’s cyclical (i.e. some styles from the past come back); and you wouldn’t want to be caught dead with whatever was popular last season.
That said, while most of us are abstaining from having rugrats of our own these days, there always seems to be some niece, nephew, younger sibling, etc., to shop for. The biggest players for 2014 include anything to do with Frozen, Paws Patrol, and Ever After High dolls. Also, Lego remains a popular choice with children, particularly after the success of this year’s The Lego Movie, along with partnerships with other kids’ favourites like The Hobbit, DC Comics, and Marvel Comics.
