As winter starts to peek over the horizon and her cold, frigid kiss gets that much closer to our collective doorstep, we find ourselves in the same unenviable position we were in last winter… and the winter before that (that fact is mind-blowing). Coping with the frosty gloom of winter is usually hard enough; tacking on a global pandemic is another hefty ball of wax, indeed.

However, we as Canadians are a different breed. We smile as we stare down the winter’s incoming grey gloom and embrace the inevitable, that is, under normal circumstances. COVID-19 has thrown us a curveball, but there are ways to go about preparing ourselves for the rather unpleasant situation of the dreaded pandemic winter.

Here’s how to get ready for a pandemic winter
Masks
Let’s face it, at this point we are all tired of wearing the mask, right? But, it’s imperative that we continue to don the face covering to ensure that society returns to normal asap. With the winter approaching, why not turn that blasted (yet essential) mask into something that can work double duty for you. Invest in a heftier mask while venturing outside. The thick material will provide a layer of warmth in the frostier months. Make the most of those little beauties.
Get Your Flu Shot
Flu season is just around the corner and with all the talk of vaccinations for COVID, it’s easy to forget that we should also be mindful of that other pesky little virus that frequents our lives in the winter months. Getting your flu shot is a surefire way to strengthen your immune system and ensure that, along with your COVID vaccine, you keep yourself safe from healthy and virus free.
Keep In Touch With Family And Friends
Even though restrictions are loosening up, we are still within the grip of this pandemic. However, we mustn’t let that fact stop us from continuing to live our lives. Communication with our loved ones and friends can provide much needed mental stability in these dire times. Depression and loneliness should not be taken lightly, and talking as well as laughing with those close to you goes a long way to ensuring mental well-being. This pandemic should not stop us from at least reaching out and communicating or even getting together (at this point) responsibly with our closest of kin.
Hobbies, Anyone?
I’m sure we would all consider ourselves veterans of dealing with life in a pandemic. Furthermore, I’m confident that at this point we have found our own ways of passing the time during this mess. The chillier months weren’t exactly the most lively; surely one would likely be spending the evening in doors, as there’s not an overabundance of things to do when the frost hits… especially now. Taking up a hobby is not only a fun way to spend you pandemic time, it’s a way to acquire a new and perhaps useful skill. Nothing wrong with that. Yoga anyone?
