Last night, like every year, Toronto closed down the streets and partied with rock stars at the MMVAs. The show itself was fantastic with performances from Imagine Dragons and the always charming Ed Sheeran. The 2014 MMVAs were far and above what we’ve seen in the past couple of years. Instead of catering to the teenage crowd that lines up around the corner for days just to get a glimpse of someone who might be famous, this year’s show catered to music lovers; fortunately for me so did the after party.
We arrived at the MUCH after party around midnight, and much to our delight not only were the drinks flowing but waitresses were running around with delicious carnival themed snack foods. I sat with some pals and chowed down on a corn dog while nursing my G&T and eying the crowd. While there were celebs hanging at the MUCH party, no one seemed to care – they won their awards, they performed, we all had fun, and now it was time to drink and dance. I will admit, though, my inner teenage girl loved being at the same party as Ed Sheeran; he’s just so talented and I’ve always had a thing for ginger boys – don’t ask me why.

After snacking and drinking for a bit The Arkells took the stage and much to my delight they performed their fabulous Motown set. The entire crowd – celebs, bloggers, industry folk, and randoms – all took to the floor and danced the night away to songs like “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”; nothing gets a crowd on their feet like old Motown songs – they simply demand that you dance, snap and jive.
There were other parties last night (a lot of parties), but there’s something about the Horseshoe Tavern as a venue that is perfect for a post-show party. That stage has played host to some of the best Canadian musicians in the business; you can’t beat that kind of heritage. Around 1:30am The Arkells headed off stage, not before giving the crowd one more rocking tune though, and we found ourselves some more gin and a few more corn dogs and boxes of french fries to keep us sustained into the wee hours.
If you ever get the chance to go to an after party, try to find the industry one. Find the party where it’s all about the music, where talking to a celeb is just like talking to another person at an event. When you find the musicians chilling with a beer or jumping on stage to help the band belt out a new tune, you’ve found the right place.
