Needless to say, it was a stunner of a weekend. Warm weather, (mostly) clear skies, and, thanks to a large chunk of TDotters being out of town enjoying cottage country or the great outdoors or what-have-you, overall the streets were pretty quiet. Kind of felt like we owned the city…

After an evening enjoying ‘the sauce’, I needed some hearty hangover helpers on Saturday. A dear friend of mine invited me out to the Whippoorwill for a recovery brunch, and I was in no mood to decline. This adorable diner serves up great twists on classic fare, like the poached eggs on buttermilk biscuits (baked in-house, natch) with asparagus and fried bologna…
…and the dense-as-hell pancakes – almost a cross between a flapjack and a biscuit – soaking in a sweet strawberry sauce. Suffice it to say, I left stuffed and rejuvenated.

Saturday night I hitched my P-I-C to my side and we meandered over to Kensington Market, along the way stopping the Be Good Gelato bike – a new frozen treat company that takes favourite summertime fare to a whole new level – in its tracks to snatch up an artisan ice cream sandwich. The hand-crafted amarena cherry ice cream sandwiched between two chocolately cookies was handheld heaven.
Then, we found our new haunt: Valentina, at the corner of Nassau and Bellevue. This cheap new spot has a sweet li’l front patio, perfect to enjoy a half litre (or three, as I did) of sangria in the soft summer breeze.
We tried the octopus and cod ceviche, mainly because it’s summer and you can’t not order ceviche if it’s readily available for you…
…and the spicy shrimp with potato wedges.

Both were nice and light, but what we really craved were the tacos. I had to get the fish tacos because breaded fish + sweet slaw + soft shells always equals some good eats.
And the rabbit and chocolate tacos were also ordered up simply because they’re basically Mexican Easter in a shell. Saturday = Game, set, and match.
Early Sunday afternoon, after lounging in bed on a YouTube trip for a couple hours, I went over to Hoof Cafe with a few fine folks. Open book: I’d never been to the Hoof. For shame, I know… especially when there’s something like the stupid good tongue benny with the shaved meat sitting atop some uber-buttery brioche with perfectly poached eggs. Alongside the wedge salad, this fella was a (figurative) happy camper.

So darling Nicki had a nice chill weekend, starting Friday night at my usual hangout The Combine Eatery. Ms. Amy whipped up her newest frozen drink concoction for my work-wife, and though the name escapes me, I know it’s a refreshing minty number with vodka, lemon, and some maple syrup.
And, obviously, Nicki had to order up The Combine’s famed al fresco lobster tacos. Look at those meaty chunks…

Saturday she spent lounging around her beautiful terrace before whipping up a dinner of her favourites: spot prawns, grilled veggies, and a watermelon salad. Flying solo has never been so delicious…
