Thanksgiving. Mere mention of the word can spring fear, anxiety, and panic into fully-grown adults across the nation. Alongside the Christmas holidays, it’s the one time of year when those demons from your past – otherwise known as your family – all converge on one spot. It’s a long weekend (emphasis on LONG) of passive-aggressive comments, awkward encounters with people you didn’t choose to be related to, and over-eating. What could possibly make this whole ordeal tolerable? The correct answer, as always, is wine.
Whether you’re hosting, going home to the family, meeting the in-laws, or just chilling with friends, having the appropriate vino is key. The general rule of thumb is to pair a white meat like turkey with a crisp, acidic white. However, because turkey has dark meat — and the fact that some families serve ham or beef — red wine can also be an option. Our friends at the LCBO and Wine Country Ontario recommend Rieslings and sparkling for vins blancs, and either fruity Pinot Noir or Merlot for vins rouges. Fortunately, cold climates like Prince Edward County in Ontario are perfect growing environments for Rieslings and Pinot Noirs so you don’t have to go far at all for this weekend’s perfect bottle!
Since the occasion is only a few days away, we’ve put together a list of the best Ontario vintages that you can grab at the LCBO today or tomorrow. Family, friends, or whoever you happen to be stuck with, make sure you’re extra grateful this Thanksgiving for these last minute wine options.
