Vv Magazine’s fashion editor Philip Mak lines up his shopping list AKA the hottest spring/summer 2015 menswear trends…
It used to be a waste of time to discuss menswear trends. Traditionally, men’s clothing has been less about seasonal changes and style, and more about investing in a collection of key pieces to last the foreseeable future. The urban man was restricted to suits throughout the week and normcore-before-it-was-cool basics on the weekends.
Thanks to socio-economic changes over the past 10 years –namely, the rise of LGBT rights, the 2008 recession, and social media— men have a growing roster of options for what they can wear beyond office essentials. Case in point: Remember when there was a Tie Rack in every mall? Exactly.

Top Toronto menswear blogger Syed Sohail, better known by his blog’s title The Prep Guy, tells Vv Magazine, “I feel that menswear has grown in importance of the past decade because men are starting to become more aware and conscious of the power of style. Today, style is a key factor in all aspects of life, from deciding what to wear on a date or for work. Subsequently, that increased the amount of men who are turning to fashion shows, magazines, blogs, and other outlets for inspiration.”
Ironically, at a time when women’s fashion weeks and trends are increasingly losing influence, male clothing is finally receiving the attention it deserves. Men’s fashion weeks like Toronto Men’s Fashion Week (TOM*) and London Collections: Men have been popping up around the globe in recent years, to much acclaim and online media attention. It reflects a change in the way men express themselves, their style, and their masculinity.
Spring/summer 2015 menswear trends exemplify this shift in the zeitgeist, with jumpsuits, bright patterns, and flowing, loosely-tailored pants ubiquitous with stylish. There has been a mix of referential nostalgia (see: the 70s trend) and also some millennial innovation. Sohail says, “For spring/summer 2015, many different menswear trends emerged or are becoming re-popularized, from a statement bomber jacket to the Canadian Tuxedo (denim on denim). Men can expect to see, the rise of neoprene, bolder prints, statement tailoring, monochrome, and luxury lounge-wear.”
