Breaking news, boys: There’s a new fantastical hair trend in town, and no, it’s not another variation of the man-bun (RIP).
Meet Merman hair.
Girls were early adopters of the mermaid hairstyle, in which they dye their hair to look all mystical deep sea-esque. Now it’s here for men. Merman hair, or #MermanHair, is the delightful new way for men to have fun with their ‘do.

Guys are hopping on the bandwagon and dying their pompadours and fringes aquatic colours, such as bold aquamarines or soft lilac purples. To reach for maximum Smurf territory, some guys are even dying their beards and brows.
This trend is slowly on the rise on social media, with over 81,000 pictures being tagged with #Merman and #MermanHair on Instagram.
This craze originated from Coachella 2015, having been one of the low-key festival trends. Now, it’s blown up with the passing celebrations of Pride. It’s not only associated with LGBTQ people though; it seems to be catching with straight guys too.
Merman hair is actually a pretty cool way to challenge stereotypes. It’s not only women who can dye their hair in fifty shades of rainbow. Yeah, we see guys do some pretty wacky things when it comes to sports, for example. But dying their hair like a girl creates a fashion statement, which seems to be here to stay.
