In case you live under a rock, let us briefly tell you about the rap beef that has music fans captivated. Kendrick Lamar allegedly threw shots at local talent Drake and fellow rapper J. Cole on a track he put out in March, which prompted both to respond. J. Cole released – and subsequently removed – “7 Minute Drill,” while Drake dropped “Push Ups,” though it was leaked online a few days before its April 19 release. Then, on April 30, Lamar responded again, laser-focused on his feud with Drake – his latest track, “Euphoria,” mentions a Toronto mainstay as a homage to the Torontonian. And, just like that, New Ho King is all the rage.
What’s happening at New Ho King?
Lamar puts on a mock Toronto accent in the second half of Euphoria to deliver the lines: “I be at New Ho King eatin’ fried rice with a dip sauce and a blammy, crodie / Tell me you’re cheesin’, fam.” It’s a clear shot at Drake, who often mentions Toronto hotspots in his music. And crodie – which means brother – is also the name of the Canadian crooner’s cat. And, sure, this whole feud has skyrocketed the two rappers to the top of the musical charts, but the Spadina Avenue restaurant is the real winner of the beef, getting all the glory.
As a result of the reference, people are flooding the Chinatown restaurant, overwhelming it with good reviews. “Kendrick was right, the fried rice here is bomb!” reads one review. “I love the beef, especially when Kendrick Lamar serves it,” wrote another fan. Both can be seen in the carousel below. The restaurant is now swimming in five-star reviews, and business at 490 Spadina Avenue is booming. It’s getting so much attention, in fact, that SkipTheDishes partnered with the eatery to give customers an exclusive 50% off the restaurant from today using code ‘6GOD’ – a nod to our very own. And, the Skip truck is now outside, especially since Drake dropped the music video for “Family Matters,” which features – you guessed it. – New Ho King.
