Call me out of fashion, but I had no idea that a parfumerie was a thing, let alone that aside from labouring over a stove and boiling down your own aromatics, herbs and oils, could one craft their own scents. Maybe it’s because I’m not one to even wear cologne every day, and though I have my favourites, I’ve got stale bottles that have been sitting on my shelf for years. That said, maybe if I had my own custom tailored eau de toilette I’d be a more frequent user of man-scents.
Of course I’m sure that all the ladies reading this are chuckling at my naïveté, but this is a call to the lasses as much as the lads – a perfume that’s designed to compliment your natural fragrance could make all the difference in your daily aura.
Depending on your timeframe, budget and requirements, here are thee different (very different) ways to acquire your very own custom fragrance in Toronto…

Locally
6 by Gee Beauty
The exclusive retailer of Le Labo Fragrances in Toronto, these one-of-a-kind creations are both handmade and personalized to have you smelling extra fabulous. Not only can you create customized fragrances while you begin to fully decipher the subtleties between each scent, but you can also make custom candles and interior fragrances as well.
Aromachology
Without overwhelming customers with choices, the results may in fact be just that impacting. A three-step process that allows customers to choose from six different base scents and then 15 different top notes, your custom perfume then comes bottled in either 50mL ($90) or 100mL ($160) sizes. While they don’t have a standalone shop just yet, the sisters in law behind Aromachology have made their custom-tailored fragrances available in 11 different retailers across Toronto.
Online
Perfume Lab
Taking their background in the fragrance industry and turning it in to a unique online business, the Perfume Lab allows creative minded consumers the chance to curate their own concoctions. Step 1: Choose the family or “heart” of your perfume. With ten different options for the family, they suggest that this become the base for 50 percent of the fragrance. Step 2: Add varying combinations of 20 different ingredients until the scent strip gauge reaches capacity. At €50 per 50mL bottle (roughly $66) this is an approach for the more adventurous creators.
Internationally
Guerlain
If you’re taking the lavish Guerlain approach, you’ve got to be very serious about your scent. They call it the Tailor Made Fragrance and it starts with a simple interview at the Guerlain Boutique in downtown Toronto. After $75,000 and up to a year of calculated production, including a trip to Paris to meet with the “nose” of Guerlain, Thierry Wasser, one will receive three separate fragrances with which to choose from. The perfume will be presented in a 500mL Baccarat crystal bottle with quatrefoil design, as well as three 30mL bottles and twenty 60mL bottles, equivalent to five years of consumption.
