The news of a restaurant opening is always an exciting one. But just as equally saddening is the closure of one. Although many spots in The 6ix have given their goodbyes over the last few years (and more), it doesn’t mean it gets less difficult for the restaurant space. Even more so when we’re talking about those that have been around long enough to be considered a keystone in the arena.
Toronto restaurant and its sister establishment to close
The farm-to-table restaurant concept is still in the process of becoming completely mainstream. Take Toronto for example. The names that immediately come to mind might be those of Richmond Station, Antler, and of course, Marben.
The last of which is the one that will close permanently on January 29 2023.

Marben in Toronto has been both a culinary staple in the city and a fan-favourite for 16 years. It was not only one of Toronto’s first farm-to-table restaurants, but it also quickly grew as one of the hottest nighttime bar destinations.
“I couldn’t be more proud of all that the Marben team has accomplished and am looking forward to closing out this chapter just as we started… with delicious food, good friends, great music, and genuine hospitality. This is a happy ending,” Simon Benstead, Owner, Marben, said in a press release statement.
According to the Instagram post shared by the restaurant, “this decision presented itself organically as an evolution of business and lifestyle”.
Marben Restaurant and The Cloak Bar
The success of Marben in Toronto had led to the 2016 opening of its sister establishment, The Cloak Bar. Situated beneath Marben, the cocktail bar began offering bespoke cocktails and a selection of late-night eats.

The last day of service for The Cloak Bar is January 28, while for Marben it is January 29.
The restaurant was the brainchild of Simon Benstead, who chose the name after the family home where he was born in England.
