You’re strapped for cash. It’s cold as all hell outside and you’re dying to get some Vitamin D. Your friends are talking about booking a trip down south and you want to join but your financial situation is not the best. Sound familiar? Yup, you’re not alone. It’s a fact of life that most of us have to deal with and we all get frustrated – especially living in Canada. Here’s the thing though; if you get organized and make some smart decisions, it’s actually not that hard to take that trip. Once a year!
The team at View The VIBE has put together a few tips. So even if you can’t manage to take that trip this year, you just may be able to take it next year and every year after that.

Choose the Right Credit Card
There’s a lot more to this than you may think. A credit card that provides the right rewards can make a world of difference in your life and your travel schedule. Do you have a credit card now? Look into the rewards – if you’re a world traveller and the card isn’t doing much for you, get rid of it. Then apply for a card that gives travel rewards – the more the better. The best ones we’ve seen to date are the Capital One Aspire Travel MasterCards. They have two (HERE and HERE) that are both great mostly because they’re simple, easy to understand, accumulate a lot of rewards without having to spend a fortune and provide travel insurance so you don’t have to worry about this added cost. The differences between each are depend on your credit. If it’s excellent you could earn up to 2 reward miles for every dollar spent and that’s pretty damn great. Truly – a credit card that provides you with travel rewards can potentially cover the cost of a return flight to your dream vacation. Start a Vacation Fund
We all try to have a savings account to prepare for the future but if travel is your thing and you believe that a week in the sun can genuinely improve your quality of life then invest in a travel account. Go buy yourself a box and make it as gorgeous as you need to so you are reminded regularly to put money in it. Make it so you can’t open it until you’ve reached your goal – meaning you have to break it to access the cash. Think about it – if you take $25 per pay cheque, that’s $50 per month and $600 per year. Boom. Half off an all-inclusive Cuba vacation has just been paid.
Join a Hotel Group Loyalty Program
Most hotels have started giving people rewards cards to offer guests benefits and savings every time they stay at their hotel. But here’s the thing, the smaller hotel groups just don’t have that many destinations to choose from. So be smart. Do your research and find out which larger (and nicer) groups have hotels in places you want to visit. Then get their loyalty card and start traveling! You will love how quickly you start seeing benefits. We particularly love the Sandals loyalty program because all their destinations are in exotic places so you can never go wrong booking a vacation with them. But really, there are a ton of great resort groups that offer fabulous rewards.
So there you go. These are only three small steps that will quite literally take you a couple of hours to set up. Follow these and watch your life become more fruitful and well traveled. It’s not difficult – just do it.
