It seems that the heat wave we’ve been craving all winter has finally surfaced, with this weekend marking a surge of sun-seeking patrons on patios and parks across the city. Wool sweaters have officially been relegated to the backs of our closets (knock on wood), and our minds are now inundated by visions of leafy greens and juicy citrus hues. From pineapple prints to neoprene bodysuits, tropical-inspired wears are the perfect compliments to the season’s sporty vibe. We can’t think of a better way to amp up our excitement for those dog days of summer!
The SS14 runways were packed with lush jungle looks, with Carven showcasing a variety of sundresses in sophisticated palm patterns, and the wild canvases of Henri Rosseau re-imagined in succulent detail at Hermès. Tommy Hilfiger went for full-on Mountauk glamour with a tribute to all things scuba, skate, and surf, while Marc Jacobs’ exploration of the exotic led him to reinterpret hibiscus prints for a moodier set.

This season’s tropical expression depends largely on the integration of darker hues and images rendered on an exaggerated scale. Textures like raffia, coral, brocade, and tassels also make for a contemporary statement when paired with black and white basics. Try mixing this muted blue palm tree poplin shirt from Moschino with River Island’s psychedelic pineapple printed shorts. Or what about a zippered neoprene bikini with MSGM’s boldly patterned midi skirt? After all, when the most pressing item on the agenda is choosing between catching rays vs. waves, there’s really no reason not to go bold. Surf’s up!
