Space may not seem like a natural area of inspiration for designers to gravitate to when coming up with their collections; cold, dark, and (seemingly) barren are not typically qualities one aims to evoke with fashion. However, there is no denying that some form of cosmic mysticism had a bevvy of designers captivated for the Fall ’14 season, begging the question if space is not, in fact, fashion’s final frontier as well.
Rodarte led the charge with a plethora of planetary vestments emblazoned with iconic Star Wars paraphernalia, from the Death Star’s ominous spherical silhouette to C3P0’s glittering golden façade. Preen by Thornton Bregazzi also took interest in turning to the dark side, with Darth Vader’s unmistakable mug plastered over prim white blouses and frothy print dresses alike.

Fendi’s rendition was less literal, looking instead to constellation charts as embellishment inspiration for a series of sheared fur coats and floaty silk dresses. Designer Albert Kriemler, famed for the use of photo prints in his collections at Akris, tapped German photographer Thomas Ruff for his intergalactic imagery, splaying close-up surface shots of Mars onto sharply cut pantsuits and thick, voluminous coats.
When it comes to approximating this astrological trend for yourself, keep in mind that bold, electric colours usually serve as a pleasing complementary palette to the ethereal, celestial hues of space. Hi-tech fabrics and shapes, such as super-slick plastics and rounded shoulders, also lend themselves nicely to the futuristic sartorial effect. To infinity and beyond?
