I love sushi and I mean LOVE. So when I got a call from my friends at Buytopia.ca asking me if I wanted to join a group of bloggers to check out a recent deal they offered that involved making sushi at Wabora, I obviously said yes, even though this meant missing the first “TO’s Hottest Chef” event at the Drake Hotel (Adam was pretty happy to go instead…). On arrival I was greeted by some lovely ladies including Val of www.ImCharmingYou.com, Bianca of Toronto Standard, Jamie Leigh from www.JamieLeighTO.com, Liza from www.SheDoestheCity.com and of course Michele, the lovely co-founder of Buytopia.ca. Along with the ladies was some wine – always a good way to start off the night.
Wabora is a beautiful restaurant and the staff is amazingly friendly and very helpful when it came to making the sushi (and getting us more wine…). The way these classes are structured is pretty simple and efficient. You would think the class would be long but basically, they give you a detailed demonstration and then send you on your way. In groups of 2 per station, the first roll – a tempura vegetarian roll – was made in less than ½ hour and then eaten in a matter of minutes. The 2nd roll was a little more complicated… this was the Crunchy roll, which involved a lot of steps. That said we all managed to get our rolls successfully made (even little ms. Val who tried to speed through and skipped some crucial steps!) within an hour period and happily sat down to enjoy the fruits of our labour.
The whole thing was about 2 hours long and a really fun thing to do that still involves food and wine. Wabora offers these sushi making classes every Monday at 6:30pm and on Saturday afternoons. Check out www.Buytopia.ca today because rumor has it they’re offering another one of these amazing deals this week!
