There’s a new trend in Toronto, and it seems to be taking the culinary world by storm. From Masaki Saito’s new, affordable omakase experience to luxurious nights at Akira Back, Masaki Saito’s original outpost and AP, these chef-led experiences are making a big impact in the city’s food scene. And, now, there’s another hotspot that’s opening its doors to the city. Sushi Yugen offers a fresh take – and a choose-your-own experience – on the city’s dining trend.
Here’s what you need to know about Sushi Yugen
For starters, Sushi Yugen aimed to be different than all of the city’s other omakase spots. Head chef Kyohei Igarashi has a ton of sushi experience, but also high-end kaiseki experience in Tokyo, Japan and nine years of international practice. Igarashi likes to curate authentic dishes while still incorporating global influences and kaiseki techniques.
The appetizers on the menu at Sushi Yugen are quite different from a traditional sushi omakase restaurant in Toronto. And, the restaurant offers two different counters that present their own menu offerings and price points. The main counter offers both a 45-minute, 13-course lunch experience as well as an hour-long, 14-course dinner experience, while the chef’s counter amazes with a 2.5-hour, 18 – 20-course masterpiece.

In terms of the interior, it’s a minimalistic yet modern Japanese approach to design and offers an indoor patio that allows guests to stay for a drink before and after their meal. “Nestled in Toronto’s vibrant financial district, our restaurant embodies the essence of Japanese minimalism and wabi-sabi philosophy – embracing beauty in imperfection and the natural cycle of life,” says Kamen Sun, one of the Sushi Yugen’s owners. “As you enter, you will be welcomed by an ambience that celebrates these principles, fostering a connection to nature and the appreciation for imperfections. We embrace the concept of ‘flawed beauty,’ embodied in our name Yūgen,’ signifying ‘profound mystery and beauty.’”
Sushi Yugen is located at 150 York Street.
