Eyewear is often a case of the grass is greener on the other side. When you have to wear them, you wish you didn’t. When you don’t, you think they’re fabulous. Sunglasses are, of course, the great equalizer, and the good news about just-around-the-corner winter is that between the sun, the glare off the snow, and in the interest of utter fabulousness, you have more than enough reason to invest in a new pair. And hey, no one will be the wiser if you sport clear lenses with 20/20 (just don’t rub it in).
We spoke to Holly Sharma, owner of new women’s-only Yorkville eyewear boutique Holly Eyewear, about the trends she’s seeing for fall and winter.
In terms of basic structure, she tells us that she’s noticed dominating shapes, such as “ either totally round (small or oversized) [or] cat eyes with a modern touch to it.” Sharma also notes that there’s an emphasis on ’60s and ’70s-inspired styles. “Bolder the better,” she says. She mentions that women still seem to favour frames made from acetate rather than metal or titanium.

Holly Eyewear boasts an inspiring selection of classic, minimal, and truly statement pieces. Her selection of Krewe sunglasses has already been replenished since we first stopped by about a month ago—sadly, a stunning tortoiseshell-framed pair that we had our eyes on (pun intended), has already been sold. So what’s the eponymous Holly’s favourite piece? “Too many favourites…but if I could choose one, it would be the pair in the Sama Collection featuring Loree Rodkin in the model Kelly in rose gold plating.” (Pictured below.)
And here’s something that’s excellent news for your fashion sense (although maybe not so much for your wallet): “[A] new trend that we saw a lot during Fashion week—many designers are matching glasses with your outfit. Many eyewear designers are collaborating with Fashion designers. They are coming up with very exclusive designs for the next seasons coming up.”
But the bottom line is this: “Everyone is looking for something different and women are slowly picking up the statement piece. We are understanding more and more that one pair of glasses or sunglasses just doesn’t fit all outfits,” Sharma says.
Here are Vv Magazine’s picks for the best eyewear (both sunnies and glasses) for the changing season. And please, go get them before they sell out (oh, Sunday Somewhere, how you broke my heart.)
