Industry moves, major moments, and new rules on the red carpet
Pierpaolo Piccioli is taking over Balenciaga
It’s official. Pierpaolo Piccioli, the former creative director of Valentino, has been named the new creative head at Balenciaga. The news was announced by Balenciaga’s parent company, Kering, and Piccioli is set to begin his new role on July 10.
He steps in for Demna, who had been with Balenciaga since 2015 and recently moved to Gucci as part of a creative shuffle within the Kering fashion group.
In a statement, Piccioli shared his excitement about joining the legendary Paris fashion house, calling it a brand full of creative opportunity. He praised Demna’s work and expressed gratitude for what he described as a meaningful passing of the torch. He also noted that his vision aligned easily with Kering’s leadership, which he saw as the perfect starting point for something new.
Piccioli will oversee all aspects of design at Balenciaga, including womenswear, menswear, accessories, and couture. With his signature blend of elegance and emotion, fashion fans everywhere are curious to see how he’ll reimagine the house’s future.
Cannes just banned naked dresses—but why now?
On Monday, May 12, the 2025 Cannes Film Festival introduced some new dress code rules. According to the official website, “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival.” They also added that “voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted.”
Translation? No more naked dresses, and maybe leave the six-foot train at home.
It’s an interesting move considering some of the most talked-about Cannes looks in recent years have included sheer, barely-there gowns worn by the likes of Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Heidi Klum. The “naked dress” trend has only become more mainstream, so why the sudden crackdown?
Is it a safety issue? A decorum decision? Or just the festival trying to reclaim some level of red carpet control in the age of viral fashion moments? Whatever the reason, it seems Cannes is leaning more conservative this year, and that might change how celebrities approach their style game on the red carpet.
The Met Gala raised $31 million, the most in history
This year’s Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” put the spotlight on the rich legacy and evolution of Black men’s fashion, celebrating everything from sharp tailoring to cultural influence. A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and LeBron James joined forces as co-chairs, standing proudly alongside Vogue’s Anna Wintour to lead the night’s fashion festivities.
But before a single look hit the iconic Met steps, the gala had already made headlines. According to The New York Times, the event raised a jaw-dropping $31 million for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, smashing last year’s $26 million total and setting a brand-new fundraising record

Vivienne Westwood debuts bridal show in Barcelona
Remember that iconic moment in the Sex and the City movie when Carrie Bradshaw (aka Sarah Jessica Parker) was left heartbroken at the altar, wearing that dramatic Vivienne Westwood gown? Well, the label just had a major bridal fashion moment of its own.
Vivienne Westwood officially unveiled its first-ever dedicated bridal runway show at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, set against the stunning backdrop of Universitat de Barcelona.
The show featured 35 dreamy looks from the brand’s couture and made-to-order bridal lines. Classic Westwood elements were front and center. Corsets are always a Westwood staple and served as the foundation for many of the looks. The sharp tailoring brought in a refined, androgynous edge. Longtime fans of the brand would’ve spotted the revival of the iconic rose print, originally inspired by 18th-century botanist Pierre-Joseph Redouté. The collection paid homage to the house’s roots, with nods to the past and a fresh perspective for today’s bride.
Celebs are all about nostalgic dressing
Nostalgia is officially the hottest trend in fashion, and celebrities are leaning all the way in. Lately, red carpets have felt more like time machines, with stars paying tribute to iconic looks from fashion and pop culture history.
Millie Bobby Brown is leading the way, channelling the blonde bombshells of the ’90s. She’s not just taking inspiration, she’s wearing the actual outfits once worn by legends like Shania Twain, Pamela Anderson, and Gwyneth Paltrow. From sultry slip dresses to retro glam silhouettes, Millie’s giving us major throwback vibes with a fresh, modern twist.
Ariana Grande followed with a dose of vintage elegance at the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, wearing a modern take on a 1963 Pierre Balmain design. Blake Lively channelled early-2000s glam when she slipped into Britney Spears’ legendary Versace butterfly dress from 2002 for the It Ends With Us premiere. Over at the VMAS, Sabrina Carpenter sparkled in a recreation of Madonna’s unforgettable 1991 Oscars gown. And Zendaya honoured Cher while inducting her into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, wearing a gold Bob Mackie dress that looked like it came straight from the legend’s closet.
From old-school glam to iconic pop culture throwbacks, today’s It girls are proving that when it comes to fashion, some pieces are truly timeless.
The fashion trends that are everywhere right now
Butter yellow is in
According to Pinterest, butter yellow is having a major moment. Inspired by what users are searching and saving, this soft, dreamy shade is tied to trends like Dolled Up and Surreal Soirées.
The shade has been gaining traction since last year, with stars like Beyoncé and Joey King wearing it on red carpets, Sabrina Carpenter rocking it on tour, and Timothée Chalamet turning heads in a yellow suit at this year’s Oscars. It also made waves on the 2025 runways of Chanel, Alaïa, Marni, and more. Thanks to its soft, pastel tone, this version of yellow feels more wearable and more versatile, making it easier to incorporate into your wardrobe this season.
Bag charms are having a major moment, and the latest must-have isn’t your average keychain. Recently spotted dangling from the designer bags of Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Blackpink’s Lisa? Labubu’s are a quirky little creature that’s quickly becoming a street style staple.
Labubu is part of a crew called “The Monsters,” created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung over a decade ago. Originally sketched for a children’s book, the character found a second life when Chinese toy giant Pop Mart licensed it four years later.
Now, Labubu is not just a collectible, it’s a fashion statement. You can grab one for yourself from Pop Mart’s website, and retailers like Tiny Boxes or Showcase.
The celebrity outfits that sparked major conversations
Jenna Ortega just revived one of Carrie Bradshaw’s most iconic outfits
Jenna Ortega channelled her inner Carrie Bradshaw at the red carpet premiere of her new musical-thriller, Hurry Up Tomorrow. She wore the legendary newspaper-print dress from Dior’s Fall 2000 collection, designed by John Galliano. Yes, that dress that Carrie Bradshaw wore in season three of Sex and the City, where she meets Big’s wife for lunch to “clear the air”… and gets hit with the icy line: “Not only have you ruined my marriage, you’ve also ruined my lunch.”
Ortega, with the help of her stylist, styled it better than Carrie ever did (yes, I said it). She opted for sleek straight hair, gold open-toe heels, a matching pendant necklace, and a sultry smoky eye dusted in gold. She took a dress we associate with the early 2000s and gave it a 2025 upgrade, and it worked.
Of course, the dress has a much deeper history than just its SATC screen time. Galliano first introduced the famous newsprint dress in his controversial “Hobo Chic” Spring 2000 haute couture collection. Inspired (insensitively, many argued) by the homeless people in Paris and 1920s “Tramp Balls,” where elites dressed up as the poor, the show was met with harsh criticism. Galliano initially brushed off the backlash, calling critics “condescending and smug,” but later walked back his comments, saying, “I never wanted to make a spectacle of misery.”
Despite the controversy, he reimagined the newsprint motif in Dior’s Fall/Winter 2000 ready-to-wear collection, where the now-iconic chiffon dress, later worn by Carrie and now Jenna, first hit the runway on model Angie Schmidt. With custom Dior newspapers printed on fabric and even fur.
In 2025, it feels less like a commentary on class and more like a clever throwback, especially when it’s worn by someone like Jenna Ortega, who also happens to be a Dior ambassador.
Jenna Ortega is possibly on her way to becoming a style icon, and this moment proves it. By rewearing one of Carrie Bradshaw’s most memorable looks, she’s not just paying tribute to the past, she’s reintroducing it to a new generation. With nostalgic dressing on the rise in Hollywood, the question is… who wore it better: Jenna or Carrie?
Who wore it better: Anna Wintour or Hailey Bieber?
Hailey Bieber wore the same dress as Anna Wintour, and not many people can say that. At the end of April, she was spotted in New York City embracing full spring energy in a baby blue shift dress from Gucci’s Spring/Summer 1998 collection, back when Tom Ford was at the helm. It was worn by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour back in 1998 to a cocktail party at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, alongside the legendary André Leon Talley.
According to Bieber’s stylist, Dani Michelle, the dress was sourced from luxury vintage dealer TheRealList. Michelle captioned the photo “icons only.” Lately, it seems like Bieber is on a mission to solidify her status as a true style icon. Before Rhode, before marrying Bieber, she was known as a model. But now? She’s clearly aiming for more, and landing her own Vogue cover is proof.
The powder blue hue and sleek fit gave the vintage piece a surprisingly fresh feel in 2025, thanks to the way Michelle styled it with nude PVC-strap stilettos, oversized sunglasses, a beige clutch, and of course, her viral Rhode phone case. It’s proof that a dress doesn’t need sequins or drama to make a statement. The look was polished, effortless, and felt like a modern nod to ’90s fashion.
Shah Rukh Khan made his Met Gala debut
Shah Rukh Khan finally made his Met Gala debut. He showed up wearing a custom look by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Paired with his long black wool coat, he layered his accessories, wearing multiple necklaces (including a giant sparkly “K” pendant), sunglasses, and a gem-covered tiger head cane.
Zendaya and Anna Sawais’ twinning moment at the Met
When Zendaya and Anna Sawai both stepped onto the 2025 Met Gala red carpet in sleek and structured white suits and hats, fashion fans immediately took notice. Zendaya wore a Louis Vuitton ensemble, while Sawai stunned in a custom Christian Dior. The twinning moment sparked chatter online. Was this an awkward fashion faux pas or a stylish coincidence?
Zendaya’s longtime stylist and creative partner, Law Roach, quickly set the record straight in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“People thought we were upset about it, but that’s not the case at all,” he shared. “Karla Welch—Anna’s stylist—and I have been friends for years. We actually spoke about it, and Zendaya even sent Anna flowers to celebrate her first Met Gala.”
“There’s no competition—just two powerful women owning the carpet.”
Law Roach, Celebrity Stylist/Imagemaker
As for the inspiration behind each look? Totally different vibes. Anna was channelling Yoko Ono, while Zendaya paid homage to Diana Ross and Bianca Jagger. “They both looked incredible,” Law said. “There’s no competition—just two powerful women owning the carpet.”
