“Well past the knee, not quite capris” — that’s a good place to start if you’re wondering about the culottes trend…
If you haven’t already jumped on the culottes fashion bandwagon, what are you waiting for? We’re obsessed and we’re proud to admit it. Pronounced “cool-ottes” — the name says it all. These short pants (Editor’s Note: or are they long shorts?) are breathable, versatile, and fabulous. The sartorial bastard child of your favourite trousers and a vintage skirt, they’re a chic, flattering alternative to the mundanity of skinny jeans. You can find patterns that say whatever is on your mind — whether it’s “I’m ready for a good time” or “I am a power bitch.” We, naturally, prefer the latter. Victoria Beckham has recently been spotted rocking the culottes trend, and the style can be spotted on the catwalks of brands ranging from J.Crew to Thakoon.
Our only word of caution is to make sure you get a pair of culottes that either fit perfectly or are hemmed to suit your body. Ideally, they should be a healthy length beyond your knee but still above your ankle. Too short and they look too casual; too long and they make you look short and boxy. While we are forever advocates of online shopping, culottes may be something you want to try on in-person — especially if you’re investing in designer.
