Fire up your taste buds, Toronto! Two fan-favorite chefs from MasterChef Canada are bringing their culinary talents to the forefront once again with a brand new restaurant. Get ready for a delicious adventure as chef Alvin Leung and chef Eric Chong unveil their latest venture. This isn’t the first time the city is getting a restaurant from this duo, who are also behind the Asian restaurant R&D.

According to the a post shared on the restaurant’s Instagram page: “aKin means of similar nature or character which helps describe the food, as it will have elements that are similar to to what the dish is inspired by but modernized in our own way.”
aKin is set to be situated at 51 Colborne St. And while there’s no definitive opening date announced, the profile shares it will be summer of this year.

The history between chefs Leung and Chong go all the way back to the first season of MasterChef Canada. Chef Chong took home the coveted title at just 21 years old, along with being the series’ first winner. That was when chef Leung was a judge on the show, which is how the two connected.
This then led to the eventual opening of R&D, earning the restaurant a Bib Gourmand spot on 2023 MICHELIN Guide Toronto. The Guide states, “Smack dab in the middle of Chinatown, this hip, unconventional eatery is the product of their partnership, serving up just the sort of freewheeling fusion cuisine that made Chong a TV hit.”
Chef Chong’s also been busy with the opening of Lil Rebel Restaurant last month, located at Queens Cross Food Hall over at CF Toronto Eaton Centre. The highlights of the menu offerings are soup dumplings and dim sum.
