Six seasons later of Mad Men, beauty culture is still taking some serious inspiration from that polished, ’60s aesthetic. From the beehive to the dark brow, red carpets and catwalks abound and are still populated by many a potential secretary from Sterling-Cooper-Draper-whatever. From Nicole Ritchie to Zooey Deschanel, one retro trend that has found its way back to relevance in 2013 is a heavy lashing of mascara. Though the name suggests some strange, fabulous form of corporal punishment, a lashing of mascara is the use of a thick dose of mascara that is brushed out to create elongated, clumped lashes. The look is a perfect compliment to surrounding dark, smoky eyeliner and brow make-up, creamy white skin, and bright, coral lips, and the clumps of lash should be visually spaced apart.
Particularly embodying of the iconic ’60s glamour is well-defined lower lashes. To achieve this look, apply more-than-plenty of mascara and then use a lash brush to separate and lengthen those lower lids. For added drama and contrast, make sure your lashes on top are sky high. A little cat-eye never hurt a sex kitten either. Don’t be afraid to go a little overboard, Twiggy herself would often make her’s so intense they appeared almost dangerously spikey. If you want to do the full look, a lashing of mascara goes well both with pixie-cuts or under a burgeoning beehive and guarantees that your eyes will pop.
