The cast and crew of 1982 had a lot to celebrate this week at TIFF 2013. Not only did the festival presentation mark the world premiere of the drama, which was selected for the “Discovery” section of TIFF, it’s notably also the feature film debut from director Tommy Oliver. Telling the tale of a father who is raising his daughter while also trying to get his crack-cocaine addicted wife clean, 1982 is set in Philadelphia during the crack epidemic of the early ’80s and is also Oliver’s semi-autobiographical story. Starring Hill Harper, Sharon Leal, Bokeem Woodbine, Lala Anthony, Quinton Aaron, with Wayne Brady and Ruby Dee, this is definitely a departure for Hollywood star Brady who is known best for his comedy.
