TIFF just wouldn’t be TIFF without the annual Canadian Film Centre (CFC) BBQ hosted by Norman Jewison, right? Okay, in case you haven’t heard of this one, I’ll give you a primer…
The CFC was started in 1988 by Jewison – you know, the director behind such classics as In The Heat of the Night, The Thomas Crown Affair (the original), Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Moonstruck among others – to foster the development of the Canadian filmographic landscape, providing mentoring, education and guidance to students in most areas of film production. Since its inception, the CFC has seen over 1,000 graduates of their various programs.
So it was with exuberant excitement that we pulled up to the sprawling grounds of the CFC complex on TIFF’s first Sunday. (The poor grass was down-trodden by vehicles galore.) Canadian celebs gathered inside the CFC BBQ for noteworthy nosh – by such restos and caterers as Embrujo Flamenco, Pachuco, Per Se, Lick’s, Jack Astor’s, Piola, Sequel, Moments, Cheese Emporium and Fine Foods, Lollicakes, and the list goes on – and some Sunday elixirs (Mill Street and Barefoot Wine among them).

We barely had a chance to have a bite of anything – we were on the job, y’know – and before we knew it Nicki had interviewed a few Canadian TV and film stars, the food stations were closing up, the BBQ was slowly starting to wind down, and we had to trot off to Nikki Beach to interview the co-founder. Was a whirlwind indeed, and we caught it all on film…
